You Gave Robbie an Opportunity for a New Life
"βI canβt say βThank youβ enough!β"
Most of us look back on our younger years and remember school, sports and family. Robbie remembers drinking. Ever since he was introduced to alcohol in grade school, Robbie chased a buzz. In his thirties, when that buzz was harder to find, he moved from alcohol to cocaine, and eventually to crack.
Robbieβs addiction increased over the years, and his health declined. He managed to stay sober for a couple of months after open heart surgery, but as he healed, he struggled again with crack.
Although he was able to return to work, Robbie found himself under financial pressure. Most of his earnings went toward paying for medical expenses β and his addiction. He eventually lost his apartment and was living in his truck.
Robbie had never faced such hardship before. He had hit rock bottom, spiritually, physically and emotionally. The Milwaukee Rescue Mission’s New Journey addiction recovery program became his clear path forward.
Robbie recalls, βI had already made up my mind. I was at the point where I was done [with that lifestyle].β The New Journey program helped Robbie remain focused on lasting sobriety, his longest stretch since childhood.
And, while in the program, Robbie discovered something that had long been missing in his life. βI got back in touch with God,β he says. βThis is the strongest thing in my life so far. I wake up and do what Iβm supposed to do. Itβs the best new start Iβve had in years.β
Robbie was blessed with a generous employer, who happens to be a supporter of MRM. βIβve been with him for about 29 years,β Robbie said. βHeβs like a second father.β Robbie was granted a leave of absence, with the assurance that his job would be waiting for him when he completed the program. βHe told me to go get help and come back. I wish more people had that opportunity,β he says.
Today, a proud New Journey graduate, Robbie is enrolled in our six-month transitional living program. He is working, saving money and looking forward to becoming independent again. His health has improved, and he has friends and family to encourage him. Also, Robbie is grateful for the support youβve provided for him β¦ and many others along the way. He says, βI canβt believe there are that many selfless people out there. Theyβre not looking for glory or anything. I canβt say, βThank youβ enough!β
Neither can we! Because someone like you cared, Robbie has a hopeful future. Please continue to support neighbors like Robbie through your giving and prayers.Β
